Kale is Delicious...
Kale is delicious, but only because Second Bar and Kitchen said so.
Over the past year, in a quest to be healthy, I've done a lot with kale.
- I've dumped it into smoothies, mostly masking the flavor with something stronger (like oranges)
- I've juiced it.
- I've tried baking it, and when that failed, I've purchased it baked like chips.
- I've stuffed it in meat, with a lot of butter.
Overall, nothing really made kale taste good. It was either too rigid in texture or too bitter in taste. I was about to abandon all hope when I ordered the raw carrot and kale salad from Second Bar and Kitchen. The dinner portion is only $11 and includes red quinoa, grapes, onion, dill, and dressing. The lunch portion is actually larger and includes delicious grilled shrimp. I have no idea what they do to the kale specifically, but it is delicious and perfect in texture and taste. I'm proud to say that I crave kale, but only from Second.
I should also note that the delicious glass of Riesling and baked brie I have with my kale probably cancel out the health benefits, but it is so wonderful to relax had have a salad that isn't just romaine and cheese.
I'm a big fan of not just the kale salad, but the atmosphere of Second. I prefer eating outside (don't worry, the massive fans help you forget it is summer in Austin) and the food options are great no matter who you're dining with. Service is fairly quick, and you're in the heart of downtown, so post-meal options abound!
